Getting the right watch strap is not complicated once you understand the fundamentals. This guide breaks down everything you need to know, from sizing to installation, so you can choose your Artem strap with confidence.
Watch Strap Basics
If you are new to watch straps, it can feel overwhelming at first. Lug width, strap length, spring bars, clasp types.
The good news is that once you understand a few key concepts, everything becomes simple.
This guide walks you through the essentials, with links to more detailed articles and videos if you want to dive deeper.
- Anatomy of a Watch Strap
A typical strap consists of:
- Short side with the buckle or deployant clasp
- Long side with adjustment holes
- Spring bars that attach the strap to the watch
- Tang buckle or clasp system depending on the strap type
- Keeper loops (only on Classic range)
Note: If you are unsure what the terms Loop-less™ and Classic mean, or just don’t understand the difference between the two, you can check out this article.
2. Finding your lug width
The lugs of a watch are the part that the strap attaches to via spring bars. You’ll need to know the width between the lugs of your watch (i.e. lug width) as this will determine the size of strap you need.
There are two key methods for finding your lug width:
- Search your watch model online
- Measure it using a ruler or calipers

3. Finding your strap length for the perfect fit
Some of our watch straps are available in three length options; XS, Standard, and XL. Our most common length is Standard as it suits the majority of people. However, to ensure you are selecting the correct length strap for your wrist size, you can take an accurate wrist measurement.
All of our watch strap product pages feature a strap length guide which will help you select the correct length strap for your wrist size.
Below is a detailed, step by step video tutorial on how to accurately measure your wrist.
4. Installing your new Artem strap
Installing your new Artem strap is simple due to the quick release spring bars which allow tool-free installation. Just follow these steps:
- Insert one end
- Compress spring bar
- Slide into place
- Release and secure
Here’s a short video explaining the above steps in more detail.
